Episode 271 – “The Human Element Behind AI-Powered Copywriting” with Jon Benson

Guest Bio

Jon Benson is a copywriter, entrepreneur, and AI pioneer who has spent decades quietly shaping how the world buys things online. Best known as the inventor of the Video Sales Letter (VSL) — the format that became the backbone of modern digital marketing.  Jon combines persuasion science with ethical marketing principles, focusing on what he calls persuasion that feels good on both sides.

Since 2010, Jon has been at the forefront of AI and sales copywriting, working with nascent AI companies as early as 2015 to teach models the nuances of direct response copy. That work evolved into BNSN (pronounced Benson), a platform trained exclusively on high-converting marketing campaigns and built for small businesses who sell good things to good people.

Jon runs weekly live coaching sessions inside the Conversion Lab alongside his wife, Olya, a psychologist and success coach. He is a competitive bodybuilder, musician, and former philosophy major. He has partnered with industry titans including Dean Graziosi and has influenced the marketing strategies of countless entrepreneurs worldwide.

Episode Highlights

From Graphic Designer to Copywriting Pioneer: A Near-Death Turning Point

Me: Tell us about your journey from where you were to where you are today.

Jon’s story starts with a wake-up call. He built his early career in graphic design, but the relentless pace of the work took a severe toll on his health. At 38 years old, Jon suffered a heart attack, a consequence of obesity, stress, and burning the candle at both ends. That moment changed everything.

He returned to his athletic roots, lost the weight, and wrote his first book about the journey. That book became a bestseller on ClickBank, catapulting him unexpectedly into the world of internet marketing and copywriting. From there, he never looked back. What began as a health story became the origin story of one of digital marketing’s most influential copywriters.

VSLs, AI, and the Birth of BNSN

Me: What do you do now, and what is BNSN?

Jon explains that copywriting sits at the intersection of art and science. He and his team have been working at the cutting edge of AI-assisted copy since 2010 long before AI entered mainstream conversation partnering with early AI companies to understand how machine learning could learn the subtleties of persuasion.

What they found: it’s incredibly hard to teach AI to write genuine, high-converting copy. Most AI-generated content sounds like it came from AI – clean, competent, and hollow. So Jon built BNSN: a proprietary platform trained specifically on high-converting direct response campaigns, designed to produce copy that sounds human, resonates emotionally, and attracts the right customers.

The next evolution? Humanized AI. BNSN is now focused on fusing core human values into copy  not just to boost conversions, but to help business owners build businesses they genuinely love, with customers they actually want to serve.

Speed + Quality: How AI Amplifies Human Creativity

Me: How do you believe AI is changing the role of human creativity in business and marketing?

Jon sees AI as both a gift and a filter challenge. The gift: AI can generate ideas at extraordinary speed from billions of inputs. The challenge: most of those ideas are mediocre because most content online is mediocre.

The solution is blending education with AI. At BNSN and inside the Ad Collective, Jon’s team coaches clients live every week on identifying what works, what doesn’t, and how to filter AI output with a trained eye. The result is copy that’s fast and functional, but also sounds authentically like you attracting your ideal buyers rather than everyone.

Jon’s vision of what’s now possible: from idea to product to fully written sales letter in an afternoon. That was unthinkable just months ago. The bottleneck of execution has been removed. Now human creativity can focus on what matters: vision, values, and voice.

What AI Cannot Replace: Consciousness and the Human Experience

Me: What elements of creativity do you believe remain uniquely human as AI tools improve?

Jon’s answer: Consciousness. And specifically, the ability to have an experience and translate that experience into words that make someone else feel it.

He draws a parallel to music. As a musician, Jon can always tell when something is AI-generated, there’s an emotional quality missing. The same is true with copy. Great copy comes from lived experience. Jon could write powerfully about fitness transformation because he’d lived it: obesity, near-death, recovery, bodybuilding competition. A machine cannot simulate that depth.

The sweet spot? Blend your humanity with AI’s output. Use your experience to guide the voice, the story, and the emotion. Let the AI handle the execution and the volume. That combination what Jon calls HI (Human Intelligence) meets AI — produces copy that’s truly visceral and compelling.

Should Business Owners Replace Staff with AI? Jon’s Honest Take

Me: If a business owner wanted to stay relevant while integrating AI, what would your advice be?

Jon reframes the entire question. Instead of asking “How many people can I replace with AI?”, ask “How much more can each person on my team produce with AI?”

He shares a real example: Jon let go of one developer who refused to learn AI tools. But his top developer, who embraced AI early, can now do 10 times the work, making him more indispensable, not less. The lesson: invest in the people who are willing to grow with the technology.

His own productivity? He describes it as “ridiculous” closer to 20x output because he’s combined AI with voice tools, delegation, and smart workflows. He doesn’t type anymore. He talks to his AI assistant (named Isaac, after the character from The Orville) and collaborates in real time.

Option A: Same team, same hours → significantly more revenue Option B: Same team, fewer hours → same revenue, more freedom Option C: Smaller team → only if truly necessary (AI or not, an unprofitable business must cut costs) Best approach: Train everyone. Empower your team to grow. A ‘You Cloned’ workflow turns every team member into a force multiplier.

The Tools Jon Cannot Live Without

Me: What online resource or tool can you not live without in your business?

1. Free Buyer Profile (freebuyerprofile.com) — Free

Jon’s top recommendation for any business owner. Free Buyer Profile aligns your personal and business values with the people who most need to hear your message. The result: a 15-page report that helps you write copy that makes your ideal customer say, “This person gets me.”

Jon’s philosophy: it’s better to resonate with 100% of a targeted 10% than to broadly appeal to everyone and get tire kickers, refund requests, and clients you don’t enjoy serving.

2. Whisperflow — Voice-to-Text Dictation

Jon types over 100 words per minute — and he no longer types. Whisperflow lets him speak his ideas instantly, removing the friction between thought and execution. He presses one key, speaks, and it’s captured.

3. Claude Code (AI Stack / “You Cloned”)

Jon’s most powerful tool is the custom AI stack he’s built  named Isaac  which handles research, synthesis, content creation, and task delegation. In one vivid example: his CMO bought a 6-hour course the night before. Isaac logged in, downloaded all the materials, synthesized the entire thing, produced a 1-pager for Jon and a 4-pager for the team, and delivered an implementation plan  in 18 minutes.

“I’ve got dozens of courses on my hard drive I’ve never opened. Isaac is going to go through every single one of them.”

Books That Shaped Jon’s Thinking

BookWhy It Matters
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor DostoevskyOne of the greatest works of literature ever written, in Jon’s view. A philosophy major, Jon studied Russian literature extensively, and his Russian-born wife deepens his appreciation. A masterclass in human consciousness, morality, and the complexity of the soul.
Walden by Henry David ThoreauThe source of Jon’s guiding life quote. Thoreau’s writing about deliberate, examined living profoundly shaped Jon’s rejection of the corporate treadmill and his commitment to entrepreneurship on his own terms.
Any book by Tony RobbinsJon calls Robbins a genius at synthesizing complex ideas in an exciting, accessible way. Jon has worked alongside Dean Graziosi, Robbins’ business partner, and has deep respect for Robbins’ ability to distill wisdom into actionable frameworks.

Key Takeaways

  • BNSN is built for ethical marketers who want to attract their ideal customers not just anyone with a credit card.
  • The question isn’t “How many people can AI replace?” It’s “How much more can each person achieve with AI?”
  • Voice tools like Whisperflow remove friction and unlock faster, more natural ideation.
  • AI agents like Isaac can synthesize entire courses, write plans, and execute delegated tasks the knowledge gap is now closeable in minutes.
  • Great copy resonates with 100% of your ideal 10%. Narrow your message; widen your impact.
  • The human element (HI) and artificial intelligence (AI) are partners not competitors.

Jon’s Guiding Quote

Jon first heard this quote recited by Tony Robbins on the drive to the only corporate job he ever held. He knew the words from studying Walden in college — but hearing them in that moment crystallized a decision: he would never live a life of quiet desperation. That commitment to living boldly, creating freely, and refusing the treadmill of conformity has guided every chapter of his entrepreneurial journey since.
